Going Deeper: Salvation God’s Wrath & Mercy

Session Overview

In the God Delusion, Richard Dawkins writes that the God of the Bible is "arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, genocidal, megalomaniacal, capriciously malevolent bully.”

However, for us as Christians, we revel in the love and goodness of our Heavenly Father. The best known verse in the whole Bible tells us that God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that we wouldn’t perish. So are we to consider the Bible to show two completely different sides to God’s character? How do we explain to enquirers that we have a loving God when from the earliest chapters of the Bible, we see violence, pain and suffering endorsed by Him, impacting thousands of people?

We can’t know God’s entire reasoning, but we can see that God is the same yesterday, today and forever when we unpack His actions throughout the Bible. Watch and consider with us as Becky shares, and we think about how God's justice and mercy meet.
